Locality origins ??????

krhodes May 28, 2008 05:36 PM

What was the origin and time frame regarding naming localities of alterna? Like when collectors/breeders transitioned from saying "I found a cool alterna out west" to " I found a 9-mile, south hill, Boy scout", etc.

Who or which group promoted it personally or commercially?

When?

Did it have anything to do with the alterna page and named localities on the site?

Just wondering, thanks

I thought it was the Alternative's group. Joe, Gerry, Kamuran ect. Maybe Joe can add.

Doug Beckwith and Steve Phillips were part of that group as well.

Did commerce have anything to do with promoting locality animals or was it for organization of private collections.

Did this group promote rarer localities for higher prices on f1's or would that be contributed to someone else?

Pretty much everyone did that based on supply and demand. We (most of us) didn't make any money back then just like we don't make money now. We spent years and years and thousands of dollars in gas and hotels trying to pair up animals, just like today.

There are folks in this hobby solely for money, but the vast majority of alterna aficionados are not.

The use of geographical designations arose in a natural progression... once sufficient animals were seen so as to recognize the often dramatic shifts in the parameters of phenotypical variation due to changes in geography/geology. To those with a passion for the inherent natural variation of the species and the uniqueness of each population, it seemed intuitive to maintain in captivity the variety that was a large part of the reason the species held such intrigue for the folks that pursued them. It had very little if anything to do with finance as Joe said. By their very nature, gray-banded kingsnakes are not commercially collectible. Those folks who choose to pursue them do so at great expense.

I've been around "alterna people" since the late 70s . . . at first I wasn't aware of "locale" animals, but by the early to mid 80s, I was. So it goes back at least that far.

I am sure they spend (spent) more then they make (made).

I believe it was the thrill of the hunt and not to mention a touch of notoriety amongst them.

With it crop of wannabe Amateurs at best raping the landscape and them having the cuffs slapped on their dreams because their secret got out to people without discretion.

With that the good 'ole days where born!!!

Now they suffer this :

A true love of locale animals that probably brings them torment when they see people crossing the line in their captive breeding projects, making what they worked so hard at...slowly vanish.
