Discarded egg?

Emberball May 28, 2008 09:42 PM

So one of my females laid 4 eggs, and coiled two of them. The other two were just sitting there about 5 inches away. I have had this happen before, but usually with a slug or obviously bad egg. These two eggs look outwardly nice, big and healthy. I guess I will candle them, and see what I see. Any input on the hatch rate of discarded eggs?

As a side note, the two dicarded eggs were about 82-84 degrees when I found them.

I have seen eggs no longer in the snake's coils. It's hard to say if they were truly discarded as I do not use maternal incubation. But eggs outside of the coil have hatched with 100% success. I have also seen females try to incubate slugs.

I've hatched eggs that were not wrapped in the coils before but in my experience, if any eggs in the clutch are going to go bad, those are the ones that will do so.
