Just a thought...............

My collection is big enough now to when ever I thaw a mouse or rat out there's usually at leat a few takers, but there are instances that I have to discard a rodent because they're not hungry. I was thinking about adding a new species to my collection. Something that will gobble up any mice I would've had to discard. What would you guy and girls recommend adding that wouldn't get too large? I like Hondurans, but haven't done much research on them yet. I also think it would also be fun to breed another species, so what makes a good garbage disposal, is hardy, doesn't get too big, is somewhat easy to breed, and of course is pleasing to the eye? Thanks for your input.
Chris

...if its mice only, and no rats, go with one of the antaresia types. my childrens python is always hungry.

I agree with the childrens python as a garbage disposal.
Any size mouse or a small rat are devoured immediately by mine. Never any waste with them around.

I do like the short tails, but my racks are set up with 32 quart tubs and thats even pushing it for the balls as far as space. My first "real" snake was a childrens python. They are the coolest little guys. Mine managed to escape (before I got racks) twice. One time for a month and another time for 2 months!!! I had an old plastic tree trunk that I decided to take out of his cage, but I kept it just incase. I stored it in a junk cabinet and found him inside of it the second time he escaped for 2 months. I ended up trading him for a red tail. I miss that little guy.

I purchased a black throated monitor for that purpose last year.

Cornsnakes are very docile but when hungry they will gladly come out of their box to take the prey. LOL

They make great garbage disposals.
Mine will easily switch between mice and rats. I have a large adult male that recently took a weaned rat.

Besides, there are so many beautiful color and pattern morphs available.
The only negative......as with many of the colubrids, they poop and poop and poop!!

I would have to agree. I've had two of them for a few years now and neither one of them has ever missed a meal. They'll eat just about anything you throw at them, or at least mine do. Just don't feed them too much because they will eat and eat and eat and pig out forever.
Their color morphs are not as extreme or fascinating as the ball morphs, but they are still cool and some interesting combos can be made with them.
Let us know what you decide on.

if you want a garbage disposal get a monitor.
May I ask what you keep and have kept in the past?
If you haven't already I would try out the Brazilian Rainbow Boa, Not too large, easy to keep, great eaters (at least in my experience)

an Alliigator would work but they go off feed in the winter,But the Fla Kingsnakes are eatting machines as are all Getula, and the cornsnakes also a good choice......Chris

A corn, childrens python, burm, and redtails. I loved the childrens and I'm thinking about adding one of them. I do love the brazilian rainbows, but I don't want anything that I can't put in my 32Qt rack system.

Even if the mouse or rat is rancid or on the heat tape all day they will love it! Just one savanah, white throat, black throat or Argentine tegu and you are all set.

Or even a nice tree monitor...They may be a little higher priced than you had in mind, but they are really fascinating animals

Snapping turtle. They'll eat anything from pinkies to large rats, it doesn't even have to be that fresh.

I have a California King that I bought as a pet 13 years ago that readily takes excess mice or small rats anytime offered.

Brandon Osborne May 29, 2008 07:46 PM

A nice brooks kingsnake. They will eat and eat and eat anything you have left over. Here's a pretty girl.

Gentle, large but not too large, and easy to breed.
