Nile Monitor temp's

Herpitologer May 29, 2008 05:15 AM

So my Nile Monitor cage's basking spot gets up to about 135F
with the ambient cage temp at about 82-94F.

At night it drops to 77-85F

Inside his tunnel-hiding spot it stays at about 70-74F

Is that too cold at night or not?
Because i was told that its healthy for the ambient temp at night to drop 10-15 degrees..so about 70-80
Please tell me if im wrong , thanks

those are pretty good temps.

the closer you get to 70 at night, the more talent you need as a keeper. can FR pull a 70F or lower night drop? sure.

would i suggest a 70F night low for a new keeper? nope. i suggest no lower than 75F.

just know your animal well, and how to recognize low temp problems if they arise.

Thanks.

Do you kno which would be the safest heating pad out there for fire-risk and not to injure my monitor

The hard plastic orange Kane Heat Mats rigged to a rheostat.

...but you want the cage to stay in the mid 70's, not just a heat mat in there that's hot and a cold cage otherwise. There's a big difference to the animal. Folks here refer to this as "mass temps" or the temperature of the substrate if you're reading old posts, etc.
