What type of skink is this??

lassiter Aug 31, 2003 08:56 PM

While in Blanco Co.,Tx I ran across a ground skink. It looks similar to the ground skinks in my home town of Corpus Christi, Tx, but much larger. It is 7 inches long with a dark bronze colored body, with a bluish / purple tail. It has white spots on all it's lip scales. Email for a pic and I will send one to you,
Thanks in advance,
John Lassiter

Sounds like a sub-adult great plains skink (Eumeces obsoletus).

Thanks for the info. It is doing well. It ate numerous crickets and mealworms, and even drank water and soaked in it a while. How much larger will it get? It is about 7 inches long now. Will it keep its color? or will it change as it ages?
Thank You again,
John Lassiter

The great plains skink can grow to about 13". The young are almost black, and gradually change to a tan/grayish color, with each scale bordered with black. Some specimens have faint stripes.
These lizards prefer loose soil in order to burrow, which is the their normal behaviour on the grasslands. They make interesting pets, and they are one of the largest skink species.
