Thank you to everyone who responded to my 2 posts below. I took both beardies to my awesome herp vet. She diagnosed both w/ MBD (or whichever name you'd like to call it) as a result of inadequate natural light. The prior owner used the appropriate UV bulbs & changed them as recommended. My vet showed me a report from a veterinary journal, showing that only mercury vapor bulbs come close to providing the necessary UV for dragons. They are both on twice daily Calcionate syrup w/ as many hours outside as can be provided. When it turns cold again, I'll set up their enclosure w/ a merc/vap bulb.
When I move them to the cabinet cage (very soon), I'll provide merc/vap during the day & ceramic heat at night. I'll likely use newspaper for substrate. They will each have their own enclosures.
On another note, I use a bioactive substrate in my frog, salamander & crestie enclosures. I LOVE it & would recommend it to anyone as a healthy, natural, low maintenance option, especially for humidity-loving critters.
