An Adventure in North American Milks!

Sunherp May 29, 2008 09:47 PM

Alright, folks... I've finally organized a smattering of photos for you to enjoy (or not enjoy - that's up to you). Here's a mix of shots (mostly milks) both in the field and in captivity, new and old.

Let's start a field trip, shall we?! We'll begin in scenic Colorado:

Lyons, CO L. t. gentilis

Same animal, different shot

Golden, CO gentilis

Same animal, different shot

Littleton, CO gentilis

head shot

Now we'll move on to the wide open spaces in central Kansas and see a variety of gentilis:

Let's next head North to the sandy expanses of northern Nebraska:

We'll now make our way still further north and have a look at a few critters from under the Big Sky of Montana:
Powder River Co., MT multistrata

Carbon Co., MT multistrata

Bighorn Co., MT multistrata

Yellowstone Co., MT multistrata

A short-horned lizard (Phrynosoma hernandesi)

Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta)

And a beautiful sunset taken here in Billings, MT by Ryan Nafts (Deepsea)

And to round out the post, a few belly shots for Snakebit (Doug):
Central Kansas gentilis

Yellowstone Co., MT multistrata

Hopefully this post has spurred you into wanting to get out in the field and enjoy nature. Go for it! Avoid the temptation to collect everything you see, but leave it for another day, and above all, HAVE FUN!!!

Very nice stuff Cole. That Yellowstone Cty. Pale is such a nice lookin animal. We have gotta get out SOON, and find us some more. The only problem is my "Black Cat" affect on our all herp trips. But hey.... I've found some leopard frog!

Sunherp May 29, 2008 10:11 PM

Ha! You certainly do have some bad juju when it comes to herping, buddy! LOL You need to start coming on the out-of-state excursions to ware it off.

Cole great snakes and fantastic pics. How long do you keep the snakes in the refrigerator to get them to hold so still? (joking) I have to pin mine down or give them a meal to keep them from bolting.

Oh and thanks you for the belly pic of the multistrada, I wanted to compare it to this one.

They can be tricky to photo, no doubt. The nice thing about captive milks is that you can put them away and try again later! Luckily, the field photos in this post weren't too bad (other than my poor photography skills) to take because the snakes are as stunned to see you as you are to see them.

Great series of pics Cole and I personally appreciate the horny toad and painty turtle.
Mike, NY is the place for real pastrami on rye - appreciate what you've got 'cause I sure miss stepping into a Kosher deli! Jeez, I'm drooling now.....

I dunno Doug... that is actually a nicely contrasting eastern milk. I wouldn't complain about that one!! Where'd you find that one?

Chris

That one mated (2005)with a female I had from the same spot. They both escaped later that year I have a male from that clutch that looks like that one.

Todd,

Thanks! I'm a sucker for those cross-overs and red/orange markings that look like flames dancing along the snake's sides. Been getting out much?
