Cork Bark Background

DKiM128 Aug 31, 2003 09:51 PM

I've been wanting to use some corkbark as a background. I was wondering would this be permanant? If I use silicon to stick it to the back of the tank, how long will it be until the cork eventually rots. And When I have to remove it, Is there a way to remove the silicon also?

If anyone has hints for setting up a corkbark background please teach me.

If your goign to use cork bark and dont want the frogs to get behind it, in addition to siliconing youll have to liek stuff it with shag moss or something. otherwise the food will all get back there, and so will the frogs, pain in the butt i tell you.

I filled behind mine with expandable foam, and it worked out nice. Then the gravel at the bottom is up over the bottom.

I was planning on using some peat/silicon mixture and adding it the gaps. Then planning to find all the gaps and fill it with long fiber sphagnum. Is there anything else I have to do?

You can look on my site for what I did, I think it would be a pain to fill the back with moss.

what product did you use? I have been planning on a new project for this coming winter and foam is one of the materials i plan to use for the background.

Did you run hose up the back first? Where do you place your pump? Any chance you have a close up photo of the hole in the bark where the water comes through? Is there a filter or do you allow it to filter naturally ?

The pipe for the waterfall runs up under the cork, and the cord runs to the left of the cork so if I need to replace the pump I can with out removing the cork. To be honest I put the pipe in the cork after it was in the tank. I had planned on using a piece of drift wood for a waterfall, but it was too big, and took up too much room in such a small tank. The pump is just in the gravel in this tank in the lower left, back corner. I drilled a hole in the cork and fed the pipe in from the top then cut it to length. I let the gravel filter the water, and I plan to change it every month. It only has about a 1/2 gallon in it.

Hope that helps, I can get some close-ups later today if you would like.

Thanks, photos would help if they're different than your site. I just converted my 35 gallon from dirt to water similar to your only I used rocks instead of cork. I like the look of the cork with moss so I'm considering a change. I bought some living moss that is yellow and not so "living" looking! Any sources on that bright green stuff?
