Let's say I was going to get back into dragons(reading all this here is getting my wheels turning, lol, but Im really just curious)

What would you want to see bred? Any specific crosses? Specific color? Bred for size?

If you were going to have someone else breed the ultimate dragons for you....what would they be crossing or breeding towards?

My personal opinion would be size and then red.

A jet black dragon? that would be insane! I have never seen one, some pretty dark guys, but never THAT dark,
I Like RED Patterned dragons, I have 2, one with dark patterns, one with light patterns, they are very cool

beardielover17 Jun 03, 2008 05:10 PM

i like the hypo trans dragons but it seems like there are too many of the reddish ones...a wider variety of the hypo trans would be awesome

avgguy May 30, 2008 09:21 PM

I think it would be great if you would breed Hypo trans purple colored like josh at phantom, but then sell them for a reasonable price. I love dragons, but i can't come up with $700 like that. I would love to add a dragon of this morph to my collection

lancen34 May 30, 2008 11:21 PM

I would have to agree, I want a huge dragon, Red is a great color and it would be sweet to have a huge hypo translucent.

beachbeardies May 30, 2008 11:33 PM

hard to say. so much has been done through the years. reds/oranges are out there thanks to you from before. everyone seems like they tag their oranges and reds from chris allen. i bought a few from a breeder before, not going to disclose the name, if you want to know email me, but i believe they did some major inbreeding.

smoothies, leatherbacks, hypo trans, are all being done. josh from phantom dragons has some amazing dragons of those lines. i love em, but id like to see something new.

ALBINOS!!!! thats what i want to see in america. ive seen pics of a breeder from overseas, the link was on dachius website. id like to see them come here.

also id like to see some new bloodlines brought into the mix. normals or whatever. so much inbreeding is going on and alot without the knowledge of the breeders.

What would also be great is a true pied or leucistic bearded. Josh

chris allen May 31, 2008 07:14 PM

Is this a hypo (as in just hypo, or clear nailed hypo......what used to be called pastels) crossed with a translucent? What are the results of these crosses? What about health/hardiness? There had to of been a limited amount of hypo pastels(clear nails), back in the day, so are these dragons results of them or are there new lines/genetics that have been brought into play here?

RMCADguy May 31, 2008 08:10 PM

A hypotrans is the combination of the Clearnailed Hypo (pastel) and the Translucent gene. They are created via the use of Double Hets after having bred a Translucent to a Hypo.

They are healthy, Josh at Phantom Dragon has put a lot of work into making the line healthy. He got the first translucents from Europe I believe and worked for many generations to outcross them to increase diversity and vigor in the line.
I was very skeptical of Translucent dragons at first, but I have a few from Josh and believe me they are very healthy. The ones I have all Hypo Translucents, they are the fastest growing dragons I have, with an appetite to match, though they don't attain a large size, I have heard that many people's trans dragons are the largest they have.
The clear nailed dragons were made more viable through combining a number of Hypo lines, such as the Sandfire Pastels, Tangerine Hypos (not sure of the origin but learned about the through rob and vickie) and the line of "Marketed Leucistics" which are a line of clear nailed hypos that came from Europe thanks to Kevin Dunne.

I am not a massive fan of the Silkbacks, but I don't mind the leatherbacks and smoothies.

That dragon has beautiful color, but its eyes are almost freakish looking.

What kind of camera are you using Phil?

RMCADguy May 31, 2008 09:57 PM

Thank you, I am very attracted to the black eyes, I think it looks pretty cool.
That shot is about 2 weeks old, he is shedding again, I have attached a pic of him now that his head has shed, he is gonna be sick looking when he's done. I have also attached a pic of a clear nailed hypo that hatched in mid Feb, and an older hypotrans that is more greenish in color. By the way, these dragons are from Josh at Phantom Dragon. Most of my other dragons came from the Dachiu's, these factors explain their color.

I use a Canon Powershot SD 750, its the same camera I use to photograph my art.

I don't know if you would remember Chris, but I did a trade with you before you got out of it, if my memory suits me, I traded you a small adult female for a red baby, the female also produced an infertile clutch after you had her for around a month. I am in Colorado. Unfortunately, that dragon died 4 months after getting it, not sure why, she was doing great the whole time I had her, and then in a series of 2 days she just went downhill. Kinda weird.
Anyway, not to end on a bad note, lol.

Unfortunately I dont remember doing any trades except for one specific female I had, but that was from someone else and I traded a whole clutch of babies for her, lol.

Dragon looks nice.

I'd love to have an albino. Leatherbacks and silkies are really neat. Of course I love the hypo-trans too! Interesting thought though. I'll think about this more. Do you have any idea's or desires?????
Take care,
Karen

chefyossi May 31, 2008 01:58 AM

i think you have done amazing things with your reds, however i believe what made them so amazing was your love and dedication to that line. i think anything that you personally love is what you will (and have) had your success in. everyone out there has a different love or favorite. i guess getting a consensus would be a great way to breed the most sought after dragon and than financially capitalize on the ultimate line however what makes peoples dragons special (like you and josh) was the love you put into your personal favorite. its really the love you guys put into it that make the dragon so unique.

dragonjohn May 31, 2008 11:38 AM

i look at leopard geckos and snakes in general, it appears that dragons have top out. nobody is offering a raptor or a high end ball python like morph. cornsnake ==motly==correct me if i'm wrong, but all these reptile morphs have based out of an albino strain somewhere in there linage. where is our base albinos in the dragon world? do we need them? what about a porcilane white 22" male dragon with flameing red eyes.so far it looks to me that the silk backs ,smoothys and trans line are begining to breed the dragon out of dragons.but thats just my opineon.hell what do i know.i'll bet a homo albino morph bread back to some of our oranges and reds would glow in the dark.

chris allen May 31, 2008 07:07 PM

think I agree with some of what you are saying. I see some dragons posted that don't really look like normal dragons or they dont look healthy. I dont think when a dragon needs special care because its scales or skin are more delicate it is a good thing. Im not really up on what is current with morphs and colors, but im not sure if I like the look of leatherbacks, silkbacks, smoothies......etc. Id rather have big healthy colorful dragons that act like normal dragons should.

chefyossi May 31, 2008 08:32 PM

i totally agree however there are some breeders (like josh and alpha dragonz) that have put years into strengthening this line where the dragons are very healthy and docile. i do agree there are people who are breeding trans to trans and siblings etc.... wich do mess things up for a majority of the new stuff you see. again, i think your reds are amazing. if you ever get back into it, hold one for us.yossi

I too look for good dragons then frills. (Morphs) In my case I like the reds,so that is what I am working with.
Finding animals who carry all the traits one is looking for is not easy.
This is what led me to the normal blood.

I had a nice male chili with good color and a madman when it comes to breeding, thing is he is small.

I own "Ceasar" a son of "Flame" (bought him from Dragonzwhispers) so I know what I am after (Caeser is big real big 23.5 " and last weight he was over 750 grams and no spring chicken) Dog broke my scale!

11 months ago I bred Chili to a normal female and it had the desired effect.

Sid is now 8 months old and is zooming by Ceasar and He carries red! Pix are of chili-solo and Ceasar (In shed) and Sid this morning, cold.

Whas it a guy named tom or brandon?

RMCADguy May 31, 2008 08:01 PM

If I am not mistaken, it was Brandon? @ Dragons by Nature

Kclark May 31, 2008 08:20 PM

Sorry, Phil is it,,? we must have posted at the same time...you know my dragon? cool!!

Scott Clark

Kclark May 31, 2008 08:10 PM

I think It was Brandon who owned this dragon in the beginning.

He now lives in CA for good! and is right as rain,

He's a bit long in the tooth, thats OK with me...He's a winner!

Scott Clark

chris allen May 31, 2008 10:54 PM

I talked back and forth with brandon often back then and he was a great guy. I cant remember though if Ceasar went to a friend of mine, tom, who sold him to brandon...........either way those redflame/sandfire males from Flame proved to be great studs. One of them I could never get over was Matt at mystical dragons' foster. Amazing size.

PHLdyPayne May 31, 2008 12:50 PM

Snows or all white dragons are quite striking...but dont' see them in the market at all...or very rarely, especially up here in Canada.

Though the translucent and scaleless dragons are striking..I find some look rather...sickly...not health wise...but just because they are so translucent they look...unnatural. Just not my kind of morph..not knocking Josh or other breeders of these animals...some have unbelievable color and are healthy etc. Just not what I am interested in...

Red dragons are quite nice...but I do like contrast..so good pattern and color work...(weird since I do like white dragons...i think mostly because it makes their eyes stand out so and when their darken their beards..). I have definitely seen really nice blood reds too...

I have an interest in vigor in my dragons. As much as I like to see color, I would gladly take a fat, vigorous normal than a lanky, lazy red.

That said, I would be interested in seeing some high color dragons with a vested interest in their health and vigor. Size is not a big issue for me, don't get me wrong, I love seeing the massive dragons and owning them too, but I don't think it is a requisite for health and heartiness.
Black dragons would be great to see, I love the idea.

Specific color I have an interest in are Hypomelanistics, the clear nailed variety. I have many of them and I think that they have a lot of potential that is not being taken advantage of except for a few breeders like Josh at Phantom and Rob and Vickie Dachiu.

I also would like to see people working on a true yellow dragon. I know they are hard to maintain, but like any line it takes perfection. I think Draggintails has some wicked bad yellows!

Like a few others, I am disappointed that the non clear nailed snows and hypos have seemed to fizzle in the market. I love those animals.

All in all the morphs we have now still beg to be perfected.

Phil

chelusfimbriatus May 31, 2008 08:16 PM

I like the normal colored dragons, but thats just me. Jet black would be wicked pissa!!! Someone please make that happen. I'm not into the reds, oranges, yellows etc; A normal animal is always best, leave nature as it is. But I contradict what I'm saying, because I would like to see jet black dragons. My girl is normal dark mocha, with beige a lil' orange in her beard that is all. Cheers

GoodSmeagol May 31, 2008 11:59 PM

Hey,
I was just looking around at pictures of dragons, and found a poll on this website
http://www.exclusivedragons.com/
for exactly your question, you can add some 200 oppinions to your pool from it.
Cheers and good luck!

BTW I love RED PATERNED

Midnight_962002 Jun 01, 2008 12:16 AM

I have to agree. I still love the reds the most. My core male breeder is a 23.5" 625 gram red male.

kearress Jun 02, 2008 03:45 AM

Size and albino for sure!!!!!!

No smoothies/silkies, they lack the external characteristics i love so much in dragons....
