Need Rhino Help

gigantor May 31, 2008 07:00 AM

Hello all,
I have a huge male rhino, that I got from Dave Blair back in 1992.He is on a diet of mostly dark leafy greens,(very little fruit). He eats a ton and not really gaining weight.Shedding a little bit though.
Lately , his stools have become a pile of green mush, and smell really bad.Im pretty sure he needs to be treated, from what Ive been reading.
Do you think I can do this myself, without going to a vet? funds are very low. I was planning on getting some panacur from bean farm and try to treat him myself.
Is it easy,or do you think I need professional help?
Can anyone offer any suggestions
thanks Roger

I'd suggest you a fecal exame at least, just in order to identify (eventually) the internal parasites, then I'll treat it properly.
Cheers

Try using Mazuri Tortoise food. I never liked the growth or anything associated with feeding Greens. With Greens your already in a nutritional hole that you have to supplement to get out of. With the Mazuri, you have a complete diet that needs no supplementation, and it'll tighten their turds up too.

he most likley needs to be wormed. its not hard to do but if u have never done it it can be tricky. i worm all my guys once a year. look around and see if there are any herp clubs near by or experinced herper. if not call some vets and see if they take reptiles and are experenced with them. see what they charge for a fecal exam. what state are u in? good luck

You can also try feeding ZooMed dry iguana pellets. Thats what I feed mine and thier turds are also firm and hard like a dogs turd.

Roger,
IMO this is not about changing the diet. If you have been using the same diet and these symptoms have shown up its not the diet. What you described is a lot like what my rhino had. I cant tell you what yours has but mine was Cytrobactor(sp). It was only found through a blood test. It would have eventually killed him and Panacur is not what I got to treat. My point is, dont guess. At least find out what it is then decide if you want to do it yourself. I sure learned a lot from my experience.

I did not medicate ,yet.
Hes in an outdoor cage now,on a smooth concrete slab.I hose out his crap right away.Hopefully keeping his cage really clean will help. thanks again Roger
