surprise clutch of eggs

kingsnake1 May 31, 2008 08:33 PM

After checking on my snakes yesterday, I awoke to find my western hognose had laid 13 eggs this morning. I had about given up on her. She was not underweight, but being as late in the year as it is, I thought she wouldn't lay this year. Last year she laid her eggs (13) in mid April. Since I had seen her breeding on March 12, I was expecting eggs earlier. When mid-May rolled around, I just about gave up. I am so glad I double checked on her this morning. She ignored her nest box and laid her eggs (13 again...our lucky #) on the floor of her cage and buried them under 4 " of aspen shavings. They all look great. Now, hopefully albinos on the way!

Congrats on the clutch. The little round egg reminds me of one I had a couple of years ago. Somewhere I have a pic of it sitting on a nickel.

It's not late in the season. I have a single female working on her second clutch, a couple due in the next week or two, and several more that are still breeding. I put mine into cooling in groups that are staggered by a couple of weeks. They come out the same way, staggered after X number of days. I think there's a few advantages to doing it this way.
