Merker hypo eggs.

shannon brown Jun 01, 2008 12:21 AM

So, I placed my Merker hypo's (El Dorado County)together a couple months ago. When I returned home that day She had Killed the male. She didn't try and eat him just flat out killed him.
Anyway, I was superbummed and I had no idea if they even hooked up but I really doubt it.
So I fed her up even more than she was and then with a careful eye I placed my w/c male het hypo from Freeport Calif (Sac County)in hopes that he would get the job done. Well he did and now I will know if the gene is the same.

This is what Great Valley Serpentarium is calling a "Lavender". Looks pretty much the same as the snake you have pictured?

Do you think they are the same?

Thanks Shannon,

Its hard to tell from the picture but that snake looks a little more brown/tan than my Merker hypos. Mine have a distinct purple-ish hue. But anythings possible...

Kerby, Hard to say for sure.Looks like yours has a pretty god ruby red eye.I don't think its a lavender thats for sure.
Also looks like yours has more of a netting look to her rather than a smoth clean look? really hard to tell though.
The merkers have not been around all that long and I am sure most people have kept the line clean.
Does Bill have any background on the snake you got from him?

Not sure of the history of what Bill has produced. I know that my BEB are different than the GVS "Lavender" from Bill. Last year I bred this guy (GVS Lavender) to my female Lavender and got normal looking (double hets).

Yeah, I think the beb is totally different than the others.
Here is a pic of my merker (little bit lighter one) and my w/c hypo from Freeport Ca. they are very close and I won't be suprised if they are the same.

Wow! Shannon,....those virtually look like "clones" of each other!,....head, neck, banding, coloration, EVERYTHING!, that's amazing!

Yep, I talked with Gerold about his line and his animals were collected about 60 miles from mine.

Most of mine are already gone. Just a few babies left and then I'll keep one or two for pets. Why are you getting out?

I think it important to let the public know the reason(s) so everyone can be more aware. Not trying to be nosy, and if it is personal, I understand, but if it is professional, maybe we can do something to help us all.

But if you get hypos won't you still be wondering if maybe the male got the job done?

I just had my 18 month old merker hypo give me 8 good eggs too. She was bred to a Merker male.

If I can get enough weight on her, next year I am going to do the same breeding you just did (merker/brown) with that female I got from you.

Cheers

shannon brown Jun 01, 2008 11:56 AM

well, if the whole clutch hatches out hypo and looks like the merkers then I will know he got the job done before he was killed.I don't think he did cause its been to long in my book since that happened.
Anyway, if about half the clutch is hypo then I will know its the same gene and this het w/c male did the job and if they are all normal I will know its this het male and the genes are different.
2 months for some answers.

My bad. I didn't read the "Het" part.
