Monkeytail skinks - sex change?!?

ksterry Aug 31, 2003 10:54 PM

I've had two female monkeytails for approximately 10 years. They've been cagemates the whole time. Both have had babies. About 6 months ago, I added tofu, which is made of soybeans, to their diet of greens, fruits, and veggies. Lately, every night when I visit their cage to watch them, one female is biting the other female's back just like a male would do as he attempted to mate with her! It seems as if the one has undergone a sex change! Has anyone else seen this happen? Does it make sense that the hormonal effects of the soy in their diet could be affecting this female's hormones in this odd way?

Interesting observation. It could be something to it or it could be a coincidental 10 years of pent-up hormonal frustration coming out.

Sincerely,
