Sand as a substrate

gemonensis Jun 01, 2008 10:28 AM

I never used a sand as a substrate for snakes. Is it a good choice for copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)? Thanks

Sand is abrasive and does not dry well. Those characteristics make it a good substrate if you want your snake to develop skin diseases.

There are a some desert snakes that do very well with sand, provided you keep it clean and dry. A copperhead, however, is not one of them.

are all fine for copperheads. Sand can easily ingest with food and cause internal problems.

Those 3 substrates all look good and hold humidity well.

Thanks for your answers. I was afraid that sand can cause
some problems, that's why I asked. I'm using coconut substrate
for all my snakes.
