Fertlization once a

female shows signs of being gravid without having been with a male. I was most interested in an earlier post suggesting that eggs can become fertilized once a female is showing and when she has not been with a male. Is this possible? It's the first I've heard of it! Anybody know about this?? Thanks!

Hey Maureen. Not sure on that. I think that the eggs need to be at a certain spot in their developement to be ferilized-they must be ovulating just like in humans. I think the female pictured below is way to late in the game for any fertilation to take place. She looks like she is ready to lay. The females know about when they are ready and they will become receptive. At other times they usually just have a headache. lol. They will just run and hide or give the male a few head bobs and a tail wack. I believe females will be receptive some time before the time is eaxactly right but usually they can store the sperm until the eggs are at the proper stage.

They are fat! I don't see evidence of eggs, but the females and male are getting portly, and I never did worm them. We might have to wait for next year for babies after all, or do you think they could still be gravid? The one female walks onto my hand when I reach for her, and she lets me feel her tummy, but I just don't feel any eggs, at least not yet. Then again, I could be doing it wrong.

I'll get a pic in the next day or two. I moved them into a big viv, and they LOVE it!

Hi Tom,

I know you were not reffering to me with this question, but today I found 6 eggs of my dipso female. She dubble clutched as I already found 5 eggs from her 28-04-08. They all look nice and fertile. Besides that I caught my chuks mating so thats a good sign!

The site is still in dutch, but we are working on the translation. (but the pictures tell a universal story LOL)
