Sticking with Va. Black Rats

Steve_Craig Jun 01, 2008 02:27 PM

Went to some Va. Plantations today with the family, and of course herping is always on my mind. Here's a couple of pics of a Charles City, Va. Black rat that happend to be crossing a road just outside of Berkley Plantation. He was for the most part, pretty placid. You can see by my shadow I was juggling between holding the last 1/3 of his body in one hand and the camera in the other. Hard to get good pics when they don't want to stay still. Steve

Staying in Charles City not too far away I checked some boards in the hot part of the day. Didn't expect to find anything in the heat, but low & behold, another Black Rat? No, just a nice robust black racer that was more then willing to bite the hand that holds it. But even as common as racers are, I'm always excited to find them in the field. They are impressive snakes. Thanks for looking. Steve
