Not all het pieds have the marker and not all 'marker' animals are het pieds...or at least that seems to be the general consensus I have read here over the last several years when the Het Pied marker question comes up.

It is only reliable enough to get your hopes up. If you find normals w/markers, I wouldn't read anything in to it. On the other hand if you are hatching possible het pieds, you will be glad to see markers.
That's about it, and I believe in the markers. Mike
mike bell is right. means nothing in a normal. but in het pied clutches it can be useful, for sure. how do you think pete kahl and tom carlton did it. keep the marker girls. kd
it is however possible to have a ch normal with makers prove out right?
I just wouldn't count on it.
If picking out of possible hets, I would probaby look for the marker. It's not certain though. I hatched out a clutch of 100% het Pieds about 3 weeks ago and most of the clutch did have the marker, but 2 of them don't (and they are definitely 100% hets).

I have 0.1 Sib Spider with the marker, but no Pied in the mix. If you ask me it was just put out so sellers could sell more poss hets to the public.
If neither of the parents are not a Pied, just move on.

I don't see how that would help sell possible hets. If you want a conspiracy theory, I'd think the big guys would have kept the info to themselves as long as possible to pick the right possible hets to keep. In fact, that is basically what I had heard. A big name, said why sell poss hets at the cheaper price they are when I have such a good idea which ones are in fact hets.
Mike
there are a couple of more subtle markers that also seem to show up on het pieds, besides the belly deal. the belly stripes can be minor, some chaining along the side, or just a bit by the vent, but if you know what you're looking for, something is usually present. look at scott weller's pieds from last year sept. 29th on this forum, they are from a poss het pete kahl rejected. i'm sure he saw what i saw in that snake, and just went with the more obvious choices. i proved out a poss het i got from tom carlton in 2003, we debated if that snake was het based on different theories, they all seem to pan out. bottom line, i think you can do a pretty good job in your poss het clutches, if you know what you're looking for. kd
