This handsome garter was in my back yard under a board.

The picture does no justice, the dorsal stripe is cream white, and the side stripes are reddish orange.

Overall the snake appears to be in sound health, very feisty, musks a lot. about 24 to 26 inches long, just shed last night.

The location is upstate NY, and in 30+ years of picking up garter snakes, this is a first in my yard.

Is this anything other than a colorful eastern? rare?

Nice find! It does look like a flame, there are scattered populations of flames in the northeastern US, New York, Pennsylvania westward into Ohio to name a few.

Go figure, I buy a baby flame, and then find an adult

I hope the CB flames are more red.

Another feature about this snake is the head seems narrower and more pointed like a spear, my other garters have wider heads.

I will take a picture in the sun, with more natural lighting.

Not a bad spring so far, I also found a real sweet milk snake under the same boards, and it has been an excellent captive also.

I know it's off topic in the garter forum, but here is a picture of the milk.....

Lots garters in my area (Florida) nothing as stunning as that . That looks like something you buy in classifieds
