Colombian Tegu and Parrot Eggs...

Kris Diekema Aug 31, 2003 11:28 PM

Hola!
I have a young Colombian Tegu and he has a soft spot for eggs, as most Tegu's do. I also have a Quaker Parrot who just started laying eggs and they're small, about as big around as a Nickel. I'm doubting they're harmful at all in small quantities, but does anyone have any thoughts on feeding him the Quakers eggs?

From knowledge based purely on reading books and articles, I can't imagine feeding parrot eggs to a Columbian Tegu would pose a problem.
Since I am ignorant about birds, and especially parrots where does the Quaker Parrot orginate?
I ask because Tegus are considered generalist and opportunistic feeders, which means in their natural range if they should stumble upon a parrot egg I would imagine they would eat it with gusto.
If your Quaker Parrot orginates from Central America, you may be the first person I have ever met that could feed its reptile something from its native habitat. An extremely rare event for those us from the United States.

Take Care,

-Kit

Well, the Qauker IS from South America. Mostly Peru and Argentina, but they spread all over the Northerm Countries and even have large populations in Lousiana, and other Southern States and even up here near Boston. I figured that being from the same region it would be ok, but I am no eggs-pert(ha ha:-D), so I didn't know if domestic Chicken eggs would be different from Parrot eggs. I know unfertilized Chicken eggs can do something to the D3 or some other vitamin vital to growth, but I'm thinking Parrot eggs may be more nutritious. Thanks for your thoughts and anyone elses input would be great.

I don't see a problem feeding him the egg. It would probably be better for him than the eggs that you buy at the store. If the egg has been fertilized and there is actually a fetus developing in there (I know it's kind of horrible to think about), then it would deinitely be beneficial for your tegu. It's the unfertilized eggs that aren't so good in large quantities. In small qunatities there aren't really a problem, you can always add supplements to them if you crack them open first.
