when to seperate mom from litter?

albinorosy Jun 02, 2008 03:28 PM

I am eagerly awaiting my first litter and was hoping to get some opinions on when to seperate the female from the babies.
The expecting female was formally the tamest boa i have ever encountered, but has taken on a defensively aggressive posture in the past few weeks. Will leaving her in with the offspring make this worse?, better?, or will she ever revert back to her good natured self?

You need to get her moved first and then you need to get the babies moved! She will probably stay defensive as long as she can smell her offspring! Once you get her cage cleaned up she should go back to her normal self and start her normal routine of feeding and etc. Good luck!

When mom is done, move her out. Get the babies out next. Then clean the cage, and put momma back in. My females usually stay fiesty for a few feedings before she's her old self again.

Leave her be for a day or two. I usually wait untill the neos are active, which may be a few days. Hook her out, seperate everybody, and go from thier. I've also never seen a Female lay on a live neo, so don't worry about that.

I have a hogg island female that will sit on and crush all of her babies if I let her! IMO I think you should move her, it really can't hurt anything, but leaving her in with them there is always the possiblity of her crushing them. Do I ever go to bed knowing that babies are in a cage with there mommy dearest watching over them NOPE! When mom is done she's getting the hook and I have never had a baby crushed when removing a female directly after birth!

just get a rat, feed it to her, when she wraps take her out and place her ina secure tupperware. Take out babies, clean and disinfect, place her back in when shes done. Might need another rat for that one though...in a week or so, she'll be back to normal.

I wouldn't risk that method myself with presious wee ones about, and behavior tells you that can't be a sustained method. Once a year is different.

I had a big nasty burm a few years back I had to feed her just to get her out of the cage, anything near the door was a potential meal. Once out of the cage she wasn't as bad. Glad I sold her, was going on whole chickens!!! XXXL Rats would disappear in her coils, and wouldn't satisfy....

My advice is a glove and a hook, infact I use a hook for everybody until they are out of the cage. I only use gloves for females after birth, and nasty babies, its not for me its for them... Biting and getting bite are just facts of the hobby, you have to except it or except that this may not be for you.

I myself would take a bite before I excepted a crushed baby...
