Great stuff, congratulations! I'm extremely partial to Ladder Rats, good to see someone breeding them.

Yes I am finally breeding scalaris again after a period of 16 years. They are lovely snakes. Much like Pithuophis or Arizona in appearence.
My wish and dream for 2008 was the gloydis from Toledo and the triaspis. They are not seen ower here at all. Cannot thank John Firneno and Rex Knight enough for providing them to me some years ago. Absolutely my favorites among the ratsnakes. Oh yes they have given me headackes and troubles, but now FINALLY there are fertile eggs. Keepers for sure.
Another scalaris is gravid and many many other European ratsnakes. Pictures will be added later, when the eggs are there. Right now there are 8 more comming within a week or 2.
So keep looking at the topic. More is comming..........even at least one little special teaser

I thought your Toledo Fox Snake looked familiar. They originated here; the grandparents of your animals are breeding as we speak. And yes, I view scalaris as the Pituophis of Europe, and hope to work with different locales some day. Congatulations again on your success, and continued success in the future.

Grandparents...........now that is interesting. I think my animals are 4 or 5 years old. Meaning the parents are at least 8. Grandparents 12 years or more and breeding. Not surpricing with the more cold tolerant species. I had a mandarina I got as wc adult in 1981 and lived and bred untill a few years back. My oldest longissimus is turning 20 next year. Anyway very interesting to find their origin. Any informations about their habitat and so? Pictures even better.
Locality forms of scalaris are probably not in the hobby any more. At least I don`t know of any. Just to find animals has been difficult. I sold mine in 1992 after a divorce and has been looking for them since. Finally I got 3,2 from Spain.
Sacha Korell spread them in USA some years ago. I wonder what has happened to them since then

Soe,
I can remember not too long ago catching scalarais in manholes while working in Spain. I had a water line project and it seems like every one of those manholes we connected to had a scalaris or two living in it (they must like th moisture or they got trapped and couldn't get out and lived off of the frogs. I remember finding one on a spring day while excavating for a 10" water line. The snake was about 2-3 down in the earth and as the bucket lifted up I yelled "stop" just in time to scoop it from the bucket and save it a trip to the spoils pile a couple of kilometers away.

Those scalaris are neat and fiesty when warmed up. I also caught several coluber hippocrepis or horeshoe racer while I was there. Spain is a really cool place for herps.

Love all the eggs, especially the leopard rats. I found many DOR in spain and never could find one alive.

My Toledo's are 13 years old now, still going. As for scalaris, they're out there, I'll find them, I'm not at all concerned. I've heard of Portuguese specimens being available, that would be interesting.

Hi,

Nice to see some dione pics of you !
I will post some pics within 2 month of hachlings etc etc.

Yes hopefully we can meet on snakeday! I will not going to breeder-expo.

Best regards,
Gidi

The first of the dione laid her clutch. Look further down in the topic
Maybe the striped ones from you are also gravid. I am not sure though. I would prefer that they wait a year. They are not that big yet.
The dione from Kazahstan are comming within days. Hopefully good eggs this year. They gave only infertile last year. Bimaculata in about a week or so. They are just out of their shed. Situla from Kerkyra and the former Yugoslavia also within days..........I will drown in babies

Pity that you are not comming to Breeders-Expo. That will be my main event in the future.

Best wishes

Søe:

As always you've got a wonderful assortment of beautiful ratsnakes. I'm happy that I had the chance to spread Bart's gloydi line (Hi Bart!!) to you. Mine are feisty as ever and isn't it amazing to hear that his original breeders are still fertile and vigorous. That encourages my hope that my F1's will live long and healthy lives (and spread their genes around!). I love the situla, persica, scalaris and Senticolis. All great species (and real lookers).

Best regards
John

Hey John,
I hope your year is going well. I especially wondered how your bright yellow mandarins are doing. If you are producing any interesting asians this year that I might be interested in please let me know. Also are you going to be producing any of that line Vulpinis. I've always been interested in them but never had any. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon. Randy Whittington

I'll send you an e-mail but I don't think that anyone will mind if I answer your question.
I've been so busy with work and family stuff that it's been hard to get on the ratsnake site and update. I've had a few setbacks on my various mandarin projects but also some extremely encouraging results on a collaboration I had with another mandarin enthusiast. I'll try and get some photos together of an '07 clutch that I'm really excited to be a part of. I want to clear it with the other interested party before I start shooting off my mouth but I'm very happy with the appearance of the offspring from this pairing and I'm hoping for continued success.

With respect to my collection this year I've gotten off to a late start (as usual) but I'm hoping for success with mandarins, eastern and western foxes, longissima and subocularis.

Best regards
John

Thats a big persicus clutch, I didn't know they laid that many. How big are their eggs? Mine had such small eggs. Most look bad, one might be good. I purchased her as proven but I did not put them together before she became gravid! One of 2 females this year that laid eggs without seeing a male. I'm hoping for 3 females to breed next year.

Soe, congrats on your successes and new ratsnakes, especially the green rats. I hope to be working with some w/c greens by this time next year.

Jun 13, 2008 05:44 PM

Hi Terry
Yes I am specially happy for the triaspis eggs. They have given me many problems during the years, but finally I got fertile eggs. 1 is maybe dead. The other 4 perfect. Keepers for sure.....
Many more eggs have come since then, and they continue. I will make an update later in a few days. I expect 8 more clutches within a week.
Haven`t slept one good nights sleep for 14 days now. My Chinese alligators laid 4 eggs in the water. There should be many more, and she looks like a balloon. So I check and check but no.....the first 4 looks infertile. That is a bummer.
Besides that everything is breeding this year. Hundres of eggs from lizards, turtles and ratsnakes. I seriously need to find a good suplyer of pinckies. They are incredible expensive here about 60-70 cent each, so I might go to Germany or Sweden and get them there.
So look out for the update. It will come soon

Best wishes
Søe

Thanks for the update. Best of luck with all those babies, Soe. I'll be trying to find green rats in the mountains.
