Calking average size within a year?

jesterx626 Jun 03, 2008 06:44 AM

How big/long does the average calking grow in its first year of life? I bought it as a captive bred '08 @ 1 ft length.

It depends largely on how much it eats. I have a 10 month old that I bought at 12" long last year (he was 1 month old at the time). He was slow getting switched to f/t pinkies, but when about five months ago he took off. He's taking 10-15 peach fuzzies a week (2-3 feedings of 5) and growing up to an inch a week. He's 25" this week.
I also have a 2006 cal king that is still on 16" long. I just got her a couple of months ago and she's still around 16". At the time, she and the other one were roughly the same size!

Within a year they usually get to at least 24".

It depends greatly.
If it has had recent wild blood added to the line, some localities are smaller as adult and don't grow as large or as fast as others.

If it is many generations captive bred - it seems many breeders like to select for size and growth rates.

I would agree with Mike from my limited personal experience - unless they have been brumated for their first winter (and even then sometimes) - most hit at least 24 inches in captivity during their first year. Some can hit 30 or more.

I decided my old sig was too big.

Around a foot sounds about right. Some individuals may be above or below that length.
