2 more photos of "Chief" the WC Flame

dekaybrown Jun 03, 2008 04:37 PM

Poor cloudy lighting again today, the photo from above you can clearly see the cream white back stripe, and the pointy head.

The other photo was taken in a tote with corn cob litter. His (hers) cage has aspen shavings in it. I ordered a new water dish and hide log today, setting this one up in style.

Wayne A. Harvey

I feel rather stupid for not even noticing, this snake has a white stripe too, the red is washed out heavily by the brown.

I mistook this for an ordinary eastern. but when she shed, the edges of her side stripe scales revealed some red.. and that white back stripe, is that an indicator?

Can the flame gene become diluted with passing generations?

and SHE is plumping up fast.... I wonder???

Wayne

Doesn't look like a flame at all....
Eastern garter snakes are variable, that's it.

Thanks I feel somewhat the same, but Scott (who knows his garters) told me this is a flame, and I have compared as many photos as I can, wild specimens are not even close to the rich reds of the captive bred.

I already invested the bucks on a captive bred flame from Scott, but I am going to keep this one also, I know you do some snake hunting yourself, and Easterns with red and white stripes are not an everyday find.

I also find the shape of this snakes head interesting, I have a normal eastern with a wider head?

The Gravid female has only hints of red on the scale edges, and a cream white dorsal, so I think it will be interesting to deliver the litter and see what pops out Maybe nothing special, but who knows what may be cooking in the oven.

Wayne

It doesn't look gravid either.

Tell that to the 17 babies that just popped out....

She may only be an eastern with some red shades, but definitely very gravid.

And at least one of the babies has rusty red sides.

Got the flame base covered...

And a second CB flame on the way.

Upstate NY? Caught in Forestburg or Pond Eddy?

dekaybrown Jun 10, 2008 06:03 AM

I live at the base of Sugar Hill state forest, half way between Watkins Glen and Corning N.Y.

Zip 14812 for map searching.

Oh, I didn't want the location that you found them. I just wanted to know if you found them in the areas I mentioned. Apparently not.
