I'm wondering where you live... The easterns here in MN are a steely-blue gray, with the markings almost impossible to see as they're only just a wee bit darker than the ground color. Their heads are much more > shaped, with elongated dark, blackish patches on either side of the head.

Our westerns look like your snake. Could it be your snake is a western?

That is an eastern all the way man! And a nice one at that! So did you scent the mouse?

I didnt scent. It's a very agressive snake and anything around the head will produce a strike.I found the little turd basking on our local bike trail and unlike the others he didnt roll over and play dead. The picture doesnt do the snake justice. In sunlight the yellow/gold just shines. After he/she gets settled in Im going to sex it and try to find a mate in the same area. The funny thing is the area has no ponds,a creek bed that is dry 90% of the time and Ive never in 8 years seen a frog and very few toads. We do have alot of little 4 lined lizards and massive amounts of earthworms and other bugs.

Im from central Il.There are no westerns in my neck of the woods.Ive seen alot of easterns in a 200 mile radius of where I live just none so well banded and bright.I have seen some of the darker hogs around Braidwood lake about a 100 miles north of here.

I grew up in central IL. You know? Everything south o'Cook County? :D Actually, St. Clair County. But that was back in the dark ages, duing the times of horses and buggies, and I had NO interest in snakes at the time (shudder).

Son-of-a-gun. I'm really a noob to this snake thing and never knew there could be such a difference in Easterns. Live and learn. Whatever, ittiz a very nice snake. Up here, couldn't keep it - and wouldn't want to. They're a species of Special Concern here. Westerns, too. We *do* have a captive Garter at the park, but they're a dime a dozen and it's being used for educational purposes so they were lenient with my "Can we keep it? PLEASE????"

I've no interest in breeding. Just want my Kenabec to cuddle and love.

Good luck with your program!
