Here are more pictures of the babies that were born yesterday. Some of the pictures were taken with the flash and others without. The first three pics are one half of them and the last three pics are the other half. I haven't sexed them yet, because they're so nippy. How long does it usually take for them to calm down? Oh, and when can I expect their first sheds? Thanks and enjoy!

Hey Tia, babies are almost always nippy at birth and calm down over time with handling. I will always remember, I was in a hurry one time and put a dozen or so in a tub to be put away later. When I opened the tub later, all the heads were up out of the pile and tracking my hand ready to strike.

Looks like a nice pile of squirmers. Gonna have to suck it up, babies are just that - nippy!!

Shed's due around 12 days after birth (give or take)

I'll be in the same boat pretty soon. But I'm actually hoping my baby is a bit snappy, I think that is a good sign that it is healthy and robust. Keep in mind, in the wild they have to vigorously defend themselves to survive. I haven't been bitten in a while, but I imagine a baby rainbow boa's bite wouldn't be too painful. (Not that I'm looking forward to getting bitten.) But I'll let you know soon.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Thanks,
Ed

>>Thanks for the response.
>>I really hope if I commit to one of the babies at the shop it does calm down with handling. I only have a small ball python which has never ever struck at me, so the the idea of a big (5 ft to me is big haha) aggressive snake intimidates me!
>>The baby in the shop is a very pretty color though. Just snaps at everything. Does a baby bite hurt much? Gotta be better than a tattoo right? lol

Very nice! Those babies are so cute! Congrats on such a great looking litter.

I can't wait to have my own slime pile. Maybe in two or three months I will!

My BRB bit me once, and it didn't hurt much at all. It was totally my fault. I'd had him just a few months and he was asleep in his hide under the moist moss. I lifted the hide and started pulling away the moss when he suddenly struck (lightning fast) from underneath it. He just as quickly let go, falling back to the floor of the tank. He looked at me and I looked at him (we were both a bit surprised) and then I picked him up and he was fine. He never did it again. Of course, I've made sure to wake him up more slowly ever since---so he'll know it's me and not some scary monster attacking him as he slumbers!

Fresh little babies, cute!

May as well just get started getting nipped. It really doesnt hurt, its more of a surprise than anything. When I know I'm going to get bit, I try to keep my fingertips and cuticles out of harm's way by folding them in. Go for a back loop and lift without gripping. If you've got one intent on nailing you, show it your fist and let it bounce off a few times, then go for the mid body with your other hand. Most knock it off pretty quickly once they realize you're not eating them. I'm right handed so I always go in with my left when I'm likely to get bitten. Snakes, dogs, ferrets or whatever, left hand first in case they get me good.

Looking forward to first shed pix. Congrats on your pile of babies!
