What kind of snake for a 50gal?

jesterx626 Jun 03, 2008 10:57 PM

What type of snake can I put into a standard 50gal aquarium tank? 48" L x 13" W x 20" H.

I love the look of the columbian red tails and boas in general, as I like their catlike eyes.

Is there any boas I can put in a 50 gal besides a ball python?

How long will a columbian red tail be good for in a 50gal?

If you follow through with getting a boa constrictor you might consider getting a male. Males generaly don't get as large as females.

Amother type of boa that might do well in a 50 gallon cage is a Brazilian Rainbow Boa. They are much smaller than boa constrictors and are very beautiful.

Good luck with your decision.

Thanks man. But do you give it a "go" as for keeping a columbian red tail inside a 50gal?

By the way, where is the subforum for columbian red tail boas? I don't know if this is the right place to ask red tail boa questions.

Personally I would'nt recommend that you keep a boa in an aquarium type cage. It is very dificult to keep the snake at the appropriate temperatures to maintain a healthy animal. You should check into purchasing a used cage that is better designed for boas.

To answer your second question Yes this is the right forum to go to learn more about the care of boas.

Good luck

So you're saying I should go with something like a reptile enclosure?

If so, what's the minimum size for a red tail boa?

fgs Jun 04, 2008 12:44 AM

Yes a reptile enclosure would be ideal.

It all depends on the size of the snake. If you are starting out with a baby snake then I would get something of appropriate size. As the snake grows so should the size of the cage. In my opinion the appropriate size for an adult boa is at least 11 to 18 inches high X 4 feet wide X 6 feet long. Many breeders keep their full grown females in much smaller cages with no ill effects.

Sometimes your local pet shop or better yet a reptile shop can offer you with asistance

Good luck
