That's a neat looking turtle. That coloration is actually typical of box turtles found in certain areas where the ranges of Easterns and Three-toes overlap. I've seen some numbers of turtles from areas of Alabama with that same appearance. Either way, really cool looking.
Ah, yes. I'm quite familiar with this picture, be that I live in Dallas and the photo comes from the TX Parks and Wildlife website, no?
Ken, you hit the nail on the head. IF you did find an Eastern in Texas it would probably look like this one because of the Three-Toed. I have never seen an Eastern here, but I suspect if they are in the state, it's in far East Texas...
Do you know where the picture was taken? I have seen a turtle that looked similar and he was a Gulf Coast bt from an area near the border of Alabama and Florida. It had that dark brown, almost black coloration with the bright yellow spots. Notice the white jaw? Let us know if you know more about it's location.
