clamps needed! 7 foot boa escaped tank!

myleftarm Jun 04, 2008 11:53 AM

My boa is about 3 years old now and we tape-measured him at almost 7 feet long. We have had him since he was about a foot long). This morning I awoke to find him draped quite pleasantly on the back of an overstuffed chair next to his tank! It was amusing for a minute, until my heart fell at the thought of the other critters we have in our house that could have made Baby a very nice breakfast meal, like our ferrets and our kitten! Did a quick head-count and everyone is ok, but obviously the tank is not holding him so easily. (Tank dimensions are 6 feet by 4 feet x 4 feet i believe, my boyfriend built it). It has a wire screen top that was custom built, and on top of that sits a humungous light hood, but I think we need clamps!
Can anyone recommend hood clamps?? We need to purchase them like TODAY!
Thanks.

Custom clamps for a custom cage. I wouldnt count on the store bought clamps or all the bibles and phone books in the world to keep a boa in a cage. Is it possible to drill holes through the lid and the top of the cage so you can put several pin locks to secure it? that would be the way to go

Can't really say without pix of the cage....

Like Geckomill said, if the screen top hangs down below the top of the tank and you can drill into both, holes drilled at all four corners would allow you to insert nails to lock the top in place.

If you can't drill, than maybe a couple of luggage straps or belts, one at each end??

Bungee cords could be used possibly modify them somewhat.
There are several different sizes to look at.

Anything that can stretch can be overcome by a strong snake....

Case in point, this is Reeses, caught in the act of escaping from a boaphile cage. The center lock was engaged but the corenre one was not, he pushed his way through bending the plexi until he could squeeze through.....

Yeah, exactly the point, if you can stretch it to get it on the cage, the boa may very well be able to stretch it to get out, once they get their nose through, they can work ther=ir body through as well. When first spotted, Reeses was only half way out. Just turning, picking up, taking of the lens cap and aiming the camera (which was right there) was long enough that he was most of the way out. I ha ve found if it gives, they push, if it gives more, they push more. Of course Reeses had a strong reason to leave, the girl he had been hanging with and all over for months was gravid, he was skipping town

Or the good ol' standby, a drill and some drywall screws. I havn't had one get out yet. Though once I figure out a cage design that I'm comfortable with, they'll go away.

Yhats what we do with our female redtail...her top is screwed inplace...we just take the drill and get the screws out when we wanna feed her or take her out and hold her

Believe it or not, I can open the cages I have screwed shut faster than ones that have something else securing them. You just have to know how far to back the screws out. It also doesn't help that I have 4 or 5 prototype cages and I still havn't perfected what I want. Yet...........
