1st clutch hatched, when do I "pop" for sexing?

PiedPeddler Sep 01, 2003 02:44 AM

First time breeders (me, the female, and the male) produced 6 perfect eggs, the last one finished hatching on day 58, look like 6 perfect babies! They are now tucked away, each in their own temp controlled, high humidity plastic shoebox with hide boxes and drinking water where they will remain undisturbed until I sex them. I've read up on the popping procedure and seen it done, my question is how long do you wait? Too soon and the babies are too fragile, too long and the males might not pop easily! I was thinking around day 4, any inputs will be appreciated. When I get them out for sexing, I'll take a picture to post. Six normals might not be too exciting, but it probably never would have happened without the help I have received from this forum!
Thank you.
Paul

I wait untill they have shed and eaten at least once before popping them.

I am just learning (but so far 100% for the first time this year) and find that mine are easiest to pop right out of the egg while they are still a little out of it. I'm not always willing to push hard enough to pop them later.

you're doing it just right, Randy. If you pop them after they are 3 days of age, you risk serious injury and permanent damage to your animals.

Hasn't it been about a year? Or have you just been lurking, but not posting?

Hi Paul –

I’ve never done well with that technique, so I don’t trust my accuracy. As a result, I probe them – right out of the egg or anytime thereafter.

>> Six normals might not be too exciting....

No way! If at anytime in the future you do not get a rush when you see those noses (normal or current big morph) poking out of the eggs, then it will be time to check if you’re still alive!

Congratulations.
