Locale scarlet w/ clutch...

cn013 Jun 04, 2008 07:59 PM

This nice 'apricot' female surprised me with 7 eggs this afternoon! She's Levy County, FL locale -- also all my other stock from the same county and even general area of FL all are of the 'apricot' or at least higher orange persuasion. Very cool locale and even cooler lil' lady... hopefully i'll get her nice and plump for next year.

Just for reference the 'chubster' is from Hernando County, just two counties south.

Absolutely gorgeous. Do the babies take off on pink parts straightaway, or do they require some prompting with scenting, egg yolks, et al????

Parts, more specifically tails, graduating to heads... Not a fan of imprinting them w/ anolis but sometimes w/ a real pain it can be almost refreshing to just toss them a hatchling lizard and have it scarrfed down within minutes. This year should more than test my patience...

Awesome Chris!,.......you should get some fabulous looking little tricolored "night crawlers" from that nice looking clutch.

best of luck!

I'm just curious to see the neonates look like... tomorrow I'll get up some pics of a few others from the same spot. I know I should just expect the norm but... well I'll just snag some shots.

Thanks Doug...

Yes!,...by all means get some more shots!,.....who ever gets tired of seeing killer looking SK's?

Don't be surprised if the hatchlings start out with a white/beige, or light butter yellow coloration to the rings at first. They usually develope their yellower adult coloration a little later as they age,...sort of like cornsnakes developing their reds/yellows later on. But it's really hard to say,...some start out having some richer coloration right from the start too.

In any case, I'm SURE they'll look stunning!

Now I just gotta fatten her back up... I thought I was wrong when I felt her out last week and counted six eggs. Guess I was... lol.

Hey Chris,
Congratulations! I just got two eggs from a pair of my Sandhills Scarlets. Maybe it's a locale difference, but the North Carolina Scarlets that I'm working with seem to start on pinky parts pretty easily, yet they don't seem to get as large as the Florida Scarlets. The Scarlet eggs, and hatchlings are huge in proportion to the size of the mother. One of last years holdbacks is almost as big this year, as her mother was last year. They are a very interesting species to work with! They are definitely worth the little extra trouble. I'll post some pics when I get a chance. Here's an old pic of an '07 hatchling.

Thanks Phil... this female surprised me w/ her clutch size actually. As for differences between the locales... pretty interesting. Though I've never bred any Sandhills animals. I can say that south FL animals tend to be agressive feeders on parts as well right from the start. Matter of fact I have a cb pair from '05 that are both pushing 18" and easily could've bred. Once started they were some of my most aggressive feeders. Though by no means did they come close to matching their mother within a year -- that's damn impressive.

Very nice Chris! Love that high yellow in a classic milk snake pattern. Scarlets are certainly under rated IMHO

You know I'm not sure if underrated is completely it, though yeah they are -- people do tend to 'like' them alot. It's just that they always seem to be a novelty... Plus people seem to get intimidated by them and their prescribed difficulties.
As I'm sure you're well aware... once established these guys can be rather tenacious and surprisingly hardy.
On a side note... the animals from you are doing swell... oh and you were right about the female. In her prelay shed cycle as we speak... I'll shoot you an email when I know something.

Have a good one,
Chris

Moving them when I did was likely one of the most bone headed things I've ever done! Give me time though, I'll top it!
