Whats up with snake websites?

gulfcoastreefer Jun 04, 2008 08:52 PM

I have just went through the first 75 ball python websites I had saved. None of them are up to date. There were a lot of top breeders. Personally when I am on a website I am looking to buy I could care less what was sold.Whats your thoughts? James Hysell

I dont know, not to professional to me. If you have no snakes, you have no snakes. But to still have a 2000 dollar spider,1000 dollar male pastel etc. Doesnt make me want to look any further. And to spend ten mins to find everything you see is sold is not to cool either.

It is hard to keep a site updated and keep all the snakes fed at the same time. Not to mention everything else that needs to be done. I'm so busy I don't even have a site, everything somehow gets sold anyway. My guess from talking to others is that their site isn't what makes the business go. A buddy of mine wanted to buy some animals from another friend who is a medium sized breeder, we asked if his site was up to date to see the available animals. His reply was, sure it is up to date as long as you have a time machine.

I had a website for a few years and I took it down because I got tired of people complaining it was out of date. I am not a programer. I needed others to update my sites for me and it never got done.

It was really nice looking and I thought people would want to look at pics of my animals and know more about them and me and I am sure somebody did but without the ability to keep an up to the minute inventory they are not being used to their potential as a tool for doing business.

That said, I work a ton of hours a week and if I had the time, and someday I will make the time regardless, I will set up a site and keep it updated daily. That is always the problem. The people who need to work the site can't or don't have time and the people that can do it, never seem to. E

I can update my own website but I sometimes forget, others cannot.

Its defiantely a lot of work to keep my site updated. I am not a huge breeder but i do this full time, so i have the time to update. A lot of your "big breeders" are on the phone all day and just dont have the time or they rely on someone else to do it like evan said. I got lucky and figured out how to update my site on my own, relying on another person to do it is a real pain!

If you don't have the ability to update your site yourself it can be a challenge. I've had someone doing the updates on my site and he has been HORRIBLE.

Now I'm paying another designer to write a template page so I can update the available and clutch pages myself. I think it will be worth the $$ it's costing me.

i got one word for ya!.....KINGSNAKE.COM.....its always updated and you can see whats for sale, i use to think the same thing if your a big breeder and making thousands or more you should take the time too update your site at least every 6 months at the very least, if not you must be making out great with out doing so, and so i go where i can see something i want with out having to wait for a reply for pics. or call for priceing, i feel were wasteing each others time, if you dont have what i want or the price is out of my ball park, you wont have to sit down email me back or call me back and find out you just wasted 10-15 minutes of your time you dont have to begin with!! if you have it updated hundreds can see it then go from there, but personally you just cant beat the millions and MILLIONS of people that stroll thru KINGSNAKE!!

I learned how to use Dreamweaver this year, and I am very thankful I did...I can't imagine not being able to update my own page because I couldn't adjust the codes myself. Here is a thought though...on your available page link to a Photobucket account. Even if you can't update your website often, you can update the photobucket account....not as pretty, but easy to do!

I agree, it is frustrating to visit websites that haven't been updated this season...or sometimes last season either. In my opinion, if you can't keep it updated, don't bother with an available page! I have visited several sites with "contact me for currently availability"....maybe that would be a better option?! Just keep the web page for your contact info and whatever else you want to share with people

My big "website pet peeve" is poorly laid out/bad websites. I know that I am a newbie in this whole website world, and mine isn't perfect, but there are some terrible websites out there...the other day I went to a breeders website who had 30 items in the menu! YIKES!

Probably because most people are breeders not webmasters. It isn't just the time to upload new pics to the website, it is taking the pictures, editing down to a good size, labeling, pricing etc. Many breeders also only do this as a side line, not as their primary business, so they also have a day job to deal with too. Not to mention family, etc. as well as care and feeding of the adult snakes.

I am more interesting in seeing what breeders are available in my area who have websites, for contact info. I use classifieds such as the one here at kingsnake as well as on other sites to see availability and prices...not usually the breeder's personal website.

......makes you wonder huh?......

I hate that too....sites with 2003 prices on them yet......

...big boys and little boys need to hire web kids???

./......

...........some should just have a site that has email and phone number listed with pics of what they should have produced...when they run out they can get pic out......?....and that's it......

I try my best to keep my website as up-to-date as possible. I at least try and update once a month. But, my real reason for responding, is to addres your issue with keeping sold animals on your available page. I do not have every animal that I sold on my available pages, and I go through and purge the sold animals every 2 or 3 months. However, some people, myself included, like to see some sold animals on people's available pages, so that I can see the quality of other animals that were produced. If you only have one Spider left for sale, I would like to see the quality of a few others that you produced, so that I can make a decision if the snake I am buying has the potential to produce the quality that I am looking for.

That is all just my opinion, but remember that when you have a website, you are trying your best to please a very diverse set of people, that want to see different things.
