Good foods to feed scrawny females?

Neon Jun 05, 2008 02:37 AM

Around 4 months ago I purchased two geckos from a show down in Oregon. One sold as a male, one sold as a female. Shortly after I brought them home I started to suspect the female was actually a male because I thought I saw small hemi-penal bulges [she is a little smaller than the male]. Some time later I tested them out to see how they did around each other, and then decided to take the divider out of their tank, at this time labeling them a 1.1 pair, but with the afterthought that they might both in fact be male. They've been getting along great [which should have been my first sign] and I've been carefully monitoring their feeding. In fact, since they've been together, the female's tail has fattened quite a bit. The male never showed any interest in copulation, which added to my suspicions.

Today I found out that I did in fact have a for sure female when I headed towards my room, and saw two eggs in the tank.
I feel HORRIBLE. I had no idea she was gravid or I would have made sure that she was getting food that would bulk her up.

So now she's looking a little scrawny [and tomorrow when I can dig the divider out it'll be going back up] and I'd like to know what are some good things I can feed her to get her weight back up? I know you can feed leopards pinkies [and I have a couple in my freezer], but is there anything else I can give her in addition?

You can feed her some wax worms and phoenix worms as well. Make sure she has a dish of calcium. If you are feeding her crickets and/or mealworms make sure they are very well gutloaded, the better her food source eats the better she eats. GL. BTW congrats on the eggs.

Thanks. Yeah they both have a dish of calcium as well as water. I'm stuck home with a bum ankle, but a friend is bringing over more crickets tonight [I fed them like a day before she set the clutch] and I'll see if I can get her to pick up waxworms. The female showed very little interest in the pinkie :/

leos like live food. the pinky u tried was frozen and still. maybe try wiggling it in front of her with tongs? or try a live pinky. also, i dont think there is a need to keep your leos separate if they have already mated. your female will continue to lay eggs either way now and if she is fertile she can lay for the entire season because they can hold sperm. but, that is obviously your call. o ya, hornworms are great for food as well.. my leos love them!

Yeah I think she's not feeling too well :/ I tried wiggling the pinkiue and she licked it a couple times then walked away. I'll try again tonight. She's also totally ignored the crickets I put in with her and the waxworms. Her tail is still pretty fat, so I'll just keep an eye on her. I only seperated her so I can bulk her up a little more and make sure she's handling it just fine. Don't want her getting sick because I failed to notice she was gravid :/ So I'm just going to make sure she's nice and chubby before I put them back together.
