woohoo my first clutch

justinmatthew Jun 05, 2008 11:01 AM

I wasn't sure she was gravid and after her shed she hadn't laid, it ended up being about a week from shed to lay. The first time I saw them lock up was a couple days after her shed, so I wasn't expecting anything right away but I had kept the nest box in anyway. Well this morning I got a pleasant surprise as I saw her in her nest box with I counted 17 eggs. Thinking she was done I thought she had one lodged but then realized that she was still in the process so I have at least 19 currently. I'm excited to say the least. Any incubation tips that I might not have come across in literature, etc would be appreciated. Thanks!

looks as if there at least 21 and counting. Big clutch. She was over 600 grams before brumation.

sorry haha i keep posting to my own but I removed 26 eggs and it looks like she is still bound. This seems to be an unusually large clutch as most of what I've heard twenty seems to be on the high end.

Congrats. I had a girl lay 32 eggs this season, so congrats on the big clutch. I incubate in a 1:1 ratio by weight perlite and water, in an air tight container. Check them one a week to provide air exchange. Incubate at 78 and eggies start pipping 55 to 60 days. Goodluck!

Thanks a lot for the advice and congrats on your even bigger clutch. She seems to have this fatty build up near the tail, past her cloaca though. I noticed it before she laid which initially I thought could be a sign she was gravid, but since it was closer to the tail and past the cloaca I assumed not, and then I thought it might be a lodged egg but once again its past the cloaca. Could this be stored fat? If it doesn't slim down I'll take her to the vet unless someone tells me its normal. T

Can you post a photo of it so we can see?

here it is. Thanks!

Hmmm, I don't know that I have seen anything like that. It could just be fatty storage, you did say she was a big girl. Maybe someone else has seen it before.

I have seen this in milk snakes and I have a western hognose that has the same thing. If anybody has more experience on this I would like to know more. How old is your big female?

justinmatthew Jun 06, 2008 05:17 PM

She's a 2004 so four years old. I was wondering if it was some kind of natural reaction to a brumation or being gravid and fat is stored.

tom Jun 06, 2008 08:12 PM

Infected anal glands. i have had this treated on four hogs so far but i do not know the cause of it. the first one was a mex and i thought it was just a fatty build up and let it go for six months until my vet saw it and operated on her. when he lanced it gross brown puss poured out. thanks to my vet she is nice and hissy! back to her old self.

justinmatthew Jun 06, 2008 10:20 PM

Thanks Tom! Interestigly enough, I was looking through Snake by Chris Mattison at the book store and the pic of the W. Hog in there has the same type buildup.

nice clutch! congrats for sure.
whats your next step for the female?
im guessing the only method of treatment is heading to the vet.
scary... best of luck.

hey tom, you said you waited 6 months. in that time period what was it like did it get worse, affect her eating habits, and or daily routine? what did the doc say about how long till it killed her? or did he?
any info would be super appriciated incase any of us happen to hit this problem down the road.

thanks guys,
carefull out there
joe

Thanks for the comments! I'll be taking her to the vet and see how that goes. I'm guessing it seems that I may have a bit of time ????? I'm thinking I might want to get a couple meals in her before going though since she just laid, to make sure she has strenth and can deal with a stressful vet visit? What do you think?

tom Jun 08, 2008 03:00 PM

i would not wait. it may only need to be expressed and some antibiotics but if you wait it could mean an operation$$$$

justinmatthew Jun 08, 2008 03:21 PM

ok I'll go right away. Thanks!

hum707 Jun 07, 2008 12:46 PM

How many eggs did she lay all together?
I counted 26-27 in the picture and was wondering if she laid anymore.

justinmatthew Jun 08, 2008 02:55 PM

No, no more, she stopped at 26.

hogsandpythons Jun 06, 2008 11:25 PM

Congratulation on one heck of a remarkable 1st clutch!!! ... is this the snake's 1st year laying? If so it seems like a testament to the value of growing a female all the way up before breeding.

justinmatthew Jun 08, 2008 03:26 PM

No it is her second. The person I bought her from mated her last year for the first time, but I'm not sure what kind of clutch size it was. Thanks!
