Macklott's Temperament

herplover1978 Jun 05, 2008 04:57 PM

I was wondering what kind of temperament macklotts have and if it would be okay to house it with a carpet python? I would have to get a male if that makes a difference, do not want to breed them.

Macklott's have a bad reputation for being aggressive that is unwarranted in my opinion I have a lovely 7 foot female that is very tame with a strong feeding response. As for housing them with a carpet. I think it is best to house them alone for various different reasons, most importantly carpets and mackloti differ in humidity requirements and housing them together could make one or the other get sick then transfer the problem to one another.

It is best to save your money and get another enclosure before you go and put two snakes together that you don't have the room or resources to properly take care of which sounds like that's the last thing you want to do is cause a snake harm.

I don't keep snakes of the same species together, much less different ones. That said, my female Macklott's is over 8' and gentle, as is her father, about 7'. Then I have a 4.5' female who will take your hand off.

I had a pair of macklott's several years ago. Babies will strike and are a little hissy, but they settle down well. They have one incredible feeding response and are super quick constrictors. Mine always constricted their food, even though I only fed them dead rodents. Pound for pound, the strongest snakes I ever owned. Their lack of popularity probably is due to their subtle colors and sort of intimidating appearance. Definitely not "cute" snakes, like ball pythons. They have a subtle purple/gold irridescence which is pretty cool. I think they are under-rated snakes.
