Bearded outdoors in Cali

inv3ctiv3 Jun 05, 2008 09:50 PM

I just got a big beardie from a friend, I used to keep beardies a few years ago but haven't since and mine were always indoors. This guy has been kept outside his whole life (that I know of). But is it really safe to leave him outside at night? The lows for tonight are gonna be in the 50's...
Thanks

probably be best to bring him in at night or provide a heated area they can retreat into for night time when it drops below 65F. Other than that, bearded dragons can do well outside as long as they have good exposure to sunlight, plenty of hides, some sort of screen covering to prevent birds and other predators from getting into the cage.

If you are in Southern California you can keep them outdoors from the end of spring through the beginning of fall. I don't bring them inside and they do great.

The latest cage I built has a sloping top layer for maximum sunlight. It also extends wire completely underneath the cage so they can't dig out. Make sure to face your cage towards the south to maximize sun as well. Give them some shade to hide under. I also keep live lettuce plants (the butter leaf ones you can buy at the grocery store) in their cages so they can munch throughout the day.

A few notes:

It's probably a bit too cold along the coast of Northern CA.

It might be too hot inland many days, make sure they have plenty of shade.

Coastal Southern CA is probably the easiest, as it tends to be warm but not above the 80s most of the time.

Your bearded should be fine outdoors, especially this time of year. I have raised beardeds in the past outdoors in san diego year round, and they did great. They can take temps down to the 40's with no problems. The main thing you have to worry about is the beardeds getting too hot. Make sure they have plenty of shade and plants in the inclosures to keep them cool. During winter, you can stretch a piece of greenhouse plastic(or plasic that painters use) over a portion of the pen so that the beardeds can go underneath it and warm up. Josh
