Corn Cob and cat litter

Trolligans Jun 06, 2008 10:49 AM

I used to see corn cob in cages all the time, but now no one uses it. Is there something wrong with corn cob or is it just too pricey?

Also, what about cat litter made from recycled paper? Is that safe for snakes? Someone told me that it produces dust that might cause respiratory problems.

Right now I'm using newsprint, but I'm looking for something that I can scoop out as my snake likes to go under the newsprint to leave his messes.

corn cob can get eaten and then will blow up by soaking in too much water.....not good.....clogs snakes they think

kitty litter used to be used..the clay type....actually they can eat clay if it has no additives...

as for the shredded newspaper .....they make CareFresh.....shredded paper.kinds dry...........

.......for dry areas/ cage types... use cypress so you can wet it..........for damp cages /areas...use aspen....?

.......try them.....good luck.......

I think the primary reasons people avoid corn cob are the expansion in water thing, and the price. By volume, aspen tends to be far, far cheaper. I know the local pet stores, a bag of corn cob is like $8, whereas a bag of aspen 5 or 6 times the size is like $11. tough call . . .

The recycled paper kitty litter is the exact same thing as "CareFresh" AS LONG AS you get the kind that doesn't have any scent added in. A lot of the kitty litters have different chemicals added to make them smell good, and those might be toxic.
