Weird Egg

hum707 Jun 07, 2008 01:04 PM

My female had her pre-lay shed and has been racing around her cage.
She shed 3 days ago and yesterday she dropped a weird looking egg that was normal mostly except on one side it looked sluggish.
I threw it in the incubator anyhow, it plumped up and the slug looking material on the one side disappeared. Anybody experience anything like this? It has been a day since she dropped the egg and she is still racing around. I have a egg box in with her. She looks a lot skinnier than she did and I am worried that she ate her eggs.

No comments! All these people with hogs and no advice.

Hard to give advice on the egg without pics of it. As for the female, is this her first clutch, if so, and she is still racing around, I would say she is not done. Would be nice if you had a post shed weight.

When they are about to lay, should you handle them or is this not advised?

leave them alone dont handle them

most of my experience is with pythons and some cornsnakes. Some eggs havent fully shelled and they are laid with "water spots" in patches on the shell that are slightly translucent. this wont effect the hatchling if the egg is otherwise good.
as to no more eggs, hard to say if she laid slugs and ate them or if she is stuck with eggs in the ovaducts or if she is still pre lay and going to be alright. if i have a snake that gets eggbound i usually assume it wont be a breeder again and either let nature take its course- sometimes the eggs come out in dribs and drabs over a month or two or sometimes the female dies. as to vet care, usually this renders the female non breedable in the future- depends on what our goals are as to what to do.
