Not so much with acclimated adults, but more so with hatchlings, I find that they hide often the first few months. This is natural. In the wild, they are tiny & vulnerable, where about 80% get eaten by predators the first year. They sense this vulnerability, and hide often.
I also find that after I get them out for exercising, or feeding, they tend to stay out, often for longer than an hour. How often you handle and encourage exercise greatly determines their activity levels.
Also keep in mind that tunneling is very natural for many snakes. Mine love to customize their Care Fresh bedding with tunnels. One consistently creates a tunnel at the front of the vivarium glass, where he can silently watch me and anything else that moves in the room.
Think of it this way: If your teenager is left alone, how long do they watch TV? If you intervene and involve them in a bike ride or family task, are they not suddenly more active & energetic?
Having had at least 8 Kings, from at least 4 species, I learned long ago to just "relax" more, and to not worry about the little things. Hope this helps.
