Time for a new incubator?

Joe R. Jun 08, 2008 09:25 AM

My old incubator lasted me over 10 years and still worked fine, but I had an old fridge and decided it was time to upgrade. I removed the compressor and soldered the freon tubes shut. I removed the vegetable drawer and stapled heat cord to the rear and side walls under the glass. I drilled a small hole in the side for air exchange and used the Helix from my old incubator. It holds a perfect temp.

Insulation goes a long way, doesn't it? Your setup is as nice as any for the intended application, and yet it is very simple in that it has few components and required little modification, and it uses something that would otherwise be thrown away. I like it.

It even holds a good temp when the room gets over the set temp as long as its not too high for too long. Maybe I should figure out a way to incorporate the fridge part of my next one.
