Are some snakes just stubborn shedders?

aanata1 Jun 08, 2008 10:05 AM

I have one of my newer snakes have shed twice for me now and both times there has just been about 100 pieces of snake scales all over the cage and he refuses to shed his head and neck. Each time I have to soak him and peel that stuck shed off by hand. I keep his cage humid, especially when he's going into shed. And I even offer him a soak tub, but he won't use it. I don't mind soaking him, but it really seems to p*$$ him off, so in the interest of keeping his stress level down, any suggestions?

I had this problem with one of my milksnakes. I had her tub set up exactly the same as all my other colubrids and they all shed just fine. Her, however, always had a stuck shed that I had to help her get off. I thought it wierd that only she was having this problem, even wet-bagging didn't work without me working the shed off for her.

The solution... I gave her a moist moss hide just like I do for my BRBs. Voila! She now has perfect sheds every time without my help.

Try putting a moss hide in with your BRB if you haven't already. I was amazed at what a simple thing could do for them. I now use moss hides for almost all of my snakes!

My BRB NEVER soaks in his water bowl, but he enjoys his moss tub/hide. I recently had the first bad shed ever with one of my corn snakes (fortunately putting him in a bag filled with wet rags overnight did the trick), so now I may give the corns moist moss hides when they're getting ready to shed, too, to see if they use them and I can prevent a repeat.

Actually, it's my leopard BCI and since his first shed was a problem, I turned his whole tank into a humid hide. I even tried spraying HIM down when I saw going into shed. Still, he won't shed over his whole head. He's just big and cranky.... and I don't want to stress him... or me... by having to soak him.

Oh and BTW... he may not be a Rainbow Boa, but he does try

WOW.. he is beautiful!!
