Update on my Rose

aanata1 Jun 08, 2008 10:16 AM

I wanted to post a quick update on my Rose. She's the Hypo Sonoran BCI that came to me in less than rough condition about a month and a half ago. She's doing better, but her URI is holding strong against the antibiotics, so I took her back to the vet to try something else. We switched from Amikacin to Fortaz... hopefully I'll see an improvement soon. The vet also said she gained a whole pound since I brought her in last (in one month). Now I'm no power feeder, so I was just wondering what this means. I mean she was 3 pounds a month ago and 4 pounds now. That's a ton of weight for that amount of time. All I've been doing is feeding her an appropriate size meal (f/t medium rat), once a week. I will say this, when there is food, she is a very hungry snake. Other than that I've become very fond of her. She is the sweetest snake I've met so far. Even when I give her her antibiotic injections she is just the sweetest little thing. I hope the infection clears up soon, because I know those antibiotics are hard on their livers and I don't know how much longer she can be on them! This is the worst pic of her ever, and there will be better ones to come, but I don't want to stress her any more than I have to right now.

I'm glad to hear that she is doing better! As for the RI, it will probably take a while for it to completely go away. One of my BRBs got a RI over the winter (my fault ) and I took him in for antibiotics. He still had the RI for a couple weeks after the injection regimine (sp?) was complete. He did eventually get over it and is now back to normal. I think it took so long because reptiles pretty much do everything slowly.

I am definetley no expert, just sharing my experience with RI in Boids.

Is temperature the primary culprit in RI, or is it humididy issues, or a combination?

I think it can be either, or both at the same time. For me, I had him too cold over the winter and that is how he developed the RI. I have heard that low humidity can play a factor as well.

Roses was brought out by stress of shipping to me, but she also had a stuck shed when she arrived, so I'm guessing her humidity was not optimal either.

Temerature and humidity and as you also mentioned stress can be factors in aquiring RIs. When I used to use amakacin on snakes with RI they would come around real quick and clear it up. The switch to Fortaz was probably a good move.
Good luck,
J.

She's beautiful! I would think gaining wait was a good sign, in spite of the RI (but I'm no expert either). I hope the new antibiotic takes care of it! Thanks for the update.

Sounds like she's not getting worse which is always good news in reptiles...something you're doing is working. Her massive weight gain could have meant that she was quite dehydrated and/or empty when she arrived. Now that you're feeding her on a regular basis and she's got an appropriate environment, she's obviously feeling a lot better. Fortaz is a pretty powerful antibiotic, hopefully it'll knock out the lingering bacteria. If somehow she's got a virus rather than bacterial infection, all you can do is support her system and keep her strength up through feeding and appropriate housing, eventually she'll kick it. Did they culture her at all or just start treating? That she's eating for you and isnt lethargic should also be taken as a very good sign. I'd do a fecal once a week to make sure there are no parasites, they can cause a low stress on her system and delay her recovery from the RI.

Good job so far! Hopefully a massive improvement is right around the corner.

Amikacin is much tougher on the snake. I hear that fortaz is a third generation cephalosporin and a better choice to a snake in need of antibiotic therapy. Less tough on the liver with a better chance of healing your ailing serpent.

Good Luck and keep us posted!!!

That's why when we found out we were going to do a second round of antibiotics we requested Fortaz, I just wish I had known about it initially!

EricIvins Jun 08, 2008 04:16 PM

As long as the snake is hydrated it will be fine. Amakacin is not that bad, but the animal needs to be hydrated in order for the Renal system to process it. It is a decent Anti-Biotic, but hopefully some of the newer generation stuff will be that much better.

rainbowsrus Jun 08, 2008 04:33 PM

Like already posted, the weight gain could be twofold, a dehydrated empty digestive system snake will have a massig gain just from water and starting up the digestive system. Has she given you one of those warm brown "presents" they all seem to leave from time to time? Passing urates? Both are goos signs of a working disgestive system.

Best of luck with her!!!!

Yes, she's been pooping about once a week for the last 3 weeks and her most recent was last night. I'd like to see urates between defecations, but at least they are in with her defecations.
