Calico Chinese Beauty Eggs 2008!

tbrock Jun 08, 2008 10:22 PM

I just got home from a three day herping trip and looked in on my female calico taeniurus. She wasn't in her nesting box, so I checked one of her coffee can dry hides. Looks like I got to them in time, as all seven look good.

Congrats Toby!!! I'm glad you caught them when you did. I had a clutch from a albino to a regular female mocquardi that she layed in the hide this year. I caught them a little bit late and half went bad. I didn't even know she was gravid she had so few eggs she didn't show.
I'm glad you got a nice healthy clutch from them.

Sorry to hear that you lost half of that clutch. I almost did not check on her, thinking that she just was not as close to laying as I had thought...

Congrats Toby! Glad the trip didn't detract from your snake breeding.

Did you find anything saturday night?

Nope, I did not find anything myself on Saturday, but had a great time anyway. We explored some cliffs that were only accessible by ATV. Joe found another Blacktail down in a crevice, but we did not try to get it for photos. He also got a Texas Earless Lizard on the way back from our last canyon trip of the night/morning.

Here is the father in his gallon water jug. Sorry, I don't have any better pics of him - he doesn't cooperate for photos...

Here's a pic of a male calico from last year's clutch. I will have to get some new pics of him soon.

These have probably become my favorite snakes out of my collection. Chinese Beauties as a subspecies (or form) of Beauty Snake, are great imho, because they don't get as large as many of the other subspecies/forms, and they are generally nonagressive. I have never been bitten by any of my beauties, either adults or juveniles. Their feeding response does not seem to be as well deveolped as in the other Beauty Snakes however, and mine prefer to feed in privacy at night. However, although they are not as agressive feeders as other beauties, the neonates are easy to start feeding, and took f/t pinks for their first meals for me. Calico is a simple recessive, so calico x het calico = 50% of offspring are calico, and 50% are het for calico.
