OK, gang - your "Den-Mother" needs advice...

lele Sep 01, 2003 12:09 PM

The Den-Mother thing is in reference to Matt's post below

I am looking at some new setups for my anoles which will include new light strips/hood. Do any of you use the combo strips that hold a fluorescent and 2 incandescent? Reptile Direct has some good prices so I am thinking....

I like the idea that the incan's are under the hood that will direct more light and heat and I can have a black or red in there as well for night time spying

Any pros, cons experience MUCH appreciated - one brand better than another? My anoles are now separted so I have a 30" and a 20" requirement.

I realize that most cham setups may not be this way, but I know many of you keep other herps (and the anole forum moves at a glacial pace!)
thanks,
lele

Lele AKA "DEN MOM"LOL!-

The combo hoods do produce allot of heat. I don't think the anoles heat requirements are to high. There is one switch for the fluorescent and one for both incandescent last I saw. Now with a hood like this all the light heat will be directed in one spot. I think these combo hoods are more for snakes, large lizards/monitors, dragons, tortoises, and so on. Hope this helps!

The incandescent lights aim out toward the sides. This makes it difficult to obtain a descent basking site. I have also seen the fluorescent bulbs have problems caused from being too close to the heat of the incandescents.

...this was quite helpful. Sounds like too much heat and less flexibility. I'll just go the usual strip and separate basking lights

lol. She looks like she should be wearing bright red lipstick. Is her name Marilyn? lol.
Also, even though I know you aren't getting the combo, but just for thoughts sake, does it have just one plug? Could be hard to set up on a timer if someone wants to have the different lights on a different times...
You can get nice little stip things at a hardware store. I think it costs quite a bit less than at a pet store. Just look for one with the right size fixture for your bulbs. Also, the one I have over my crix is nice and compact. Some of the ones in pet shops are much larger, making it hard to have other fixtures over that cage. AND, if you were sd inclined, the ones at hardware stores can be built onto a lid. That's what my dad did for my crix, but he is alittle over-ambitious. (lol, what lindsay? You want this over your crix? Why don't I spend $60 more and get metal and build it into a whole new lid that has screen and opens so you don't have to take the light off to open it? LOL)

Can I rent your dad? Oh, but he'll have to foot the bil LOL!

I know, isn't that picture cute? I noticed when I first got her and was afraid it was the beginning of mouth rot, but she is fine. I think it's just the way she is. My Bahama brown looks as though she has makeup on her eyes!

Btw, good point about the single plug! I have their basking and flo. on separate timers.
