Large Wandering Garter Found!

massalvaje Jun 09, 2008 06:52 PM

I found this Large Wandering Garter up the Canyon by my house in Utah. I think it was a female, the pic I have does not have a good view of the tail but I did a ruff measurement and it is just over 30" long. I have never heard of a male that large so I assumed it was a female. Feel free to chime in on the sex of this beauty.
She had a massive head and an amazing temper. She posed well and never even musked.
If it is a female could it be gravid or is it to early in the year to tell?

I apologize for the spelling! I don't know what I was thinking when I put ruff instead of rough. Please forgive me and ignore any spelling errors you may find in the future on any if not all of my post.
Thanks

Nice pair shot! How popular are Vagrans in the pet industry? I don't see a lot of work done with them here in Utah because a permit is required to propagate, but what about other places in the country? How do they stand against some of the "more attractive" species?

I'm not too sure how popular they are in the pet industry, but with hobbiests they are becoming more popular with morphs like melanistics, & hypermels being caught. Besides the color morphs, the fact that they will eat anything you put in front of them is a reason I'd think more people would be keeping them.

I can only speak for the ones I currently have in my collection but, mine are really nice to deal with.I have a male melanistic and a normal female and so far they have been exceptional!! (thanks Dan!)I personally would like to see them become more popular in the trade. Jeff

Thats a nice, healthy looking snake, doesn't look really gravid to me but I could certainly be wrong. Dont appoligize about spelling errors, who cares about spelling, not me, I suck at spelling, good thing for spellcheck.
Those melanistic wanderings are super awesome too.
