Nest-a-palooza

StephF Jun 09, 2008 10:10 PM

Ok, so, I was out all evening and didn't get home until about 10:30, and I was pretty tired but I did remember to take a flashlight out to the turtle pen to check for any nesting activity.
Not one, not two, but three of the girls are busy nesting out there. Two of them are nearly touching, they're so close together.

Yowza!

Hey Ken, any eggs for you yet? I sent you a message off-list, BTW.

Wow, congrats, picture me handing you a cigar! 3 at the same time, conditions must have been perfect.

I went to a great deal of trouble to create a turtle habitat that is as naturalistic as possible.

The female turtles tend to nest in the same general area of the pen every year: the soil, while a compacted clay, is free from obstructions such as roots or large rocks.

I do find it amusing that the females will nest practically side-by-side...apparently they are not competitive about their nesting territory.

Do you incubate artifically indoors in an incubator or let them go natural in the nest outside. Did you take any pics of them laying? would love to see them if you did.
