thinking of trying breeding..

heffner2212 Jun 10, 2008 12:37 AM

Just found out that this new ball python I rescued is a female. So i hope to maybe give breeding a shot this fall. Ok few questions.
1. Temps are dropped to low 70s and lighting dropped to about 10 on 14 off for like 6 weeks. Then introduce the male in the females cage. If no mating try agaion in 2 weeks. Then when mateing takes place raise temps back up and resume feeding??
2. Is it ok if I buy an adult male ball python for breeding when fall comes near? Or should I have one before that.
3. Just wondering on this one but, I have a large male retic. Is it possible at all for a ball and a tic to mate? Has it ever happend?

thanks alot

1. There are MANY different formulas that will work for breeding balls. But for one thing, you don't need ANY artificial light at all, ever. Your temps and timetable there will work, but the climate where you live will really have the most impact on what the snakes actually do.

2. Your male just needs to be of age to breed. That can be as young as 6 months or in some cases even younger. The best and most responsible thing to do is quarantine any new animals to your collection for 3 months before putting them in contact with any of your other animals. You also have a better shot if your animals are acclimated and comfortable before you try breeding them.

3. A Ball x Burmese was recently produced, so anything's possible. However, that would require being able to recognize and diagnose the breeding needs of 2 species, not just 1, and figure out how to merge them efficiently. Might wanna master breeding one or the other before you get all "Dr. Moreau". That would increase your chances of success if you decide down the road you wanna try creating that freak of nature. Would be interesting to see that done though.

Most likely the retic will eat the ball python you try and breed with it.... it will be like trying to breed a house cat to a lion.
