Cal King Found Around Infant's Leg

Dan_W Jun 10, 2008 08:22 AM

According to FOX NEWS, a mother named Cari Abatemarco found a snake "coiled around the leg" of her 8 month old daughter. It turned out to be a one foot long cal king.

Officials speculated that the snake might have been inside a matress recently purchased purchased and placed in the Long Island, New York home.

Maybe the mattress factory was in California... At least they said the snake was non venomous (not non poisonous), and said it is harmless, and oftentimes kept as a pet!

from a garden center. he showed up in a bunch of plants from Fla and was 95% dead when I got him. I fed him some sugar water over a few days and then he started taking some bugs. He looked pretty good after two months and would always give me the evil "anole eye" whenever I checked him out. He fell off his branch permanently about 6 months later. That was about the time I decided to get into pits.

Some former captives that survived despite my best efforts (lol):

I wouldn't dismiss the possibility that the whole thing is a hoax perpetrated by those who want to ban snakes as pets. They are not above lying in order to generate headlines and play on the fears of the ignorant. They may have bought the thing at a reptile show or pet store and just chose this time for the hoax.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

Not to mention that the family is now suing both the store where they purchased the mattress and the matress manufacturer for multiple millions of dollars for emotional distress!!

Here is the story....

The family who found a California King snake wrapped around a 7-month-old baby's leg on Monday has decided to sue the mattress manufacturer and store where the mattress was purchased.

Baby Isabella and her mother Cari Abatemarco had been visiting her grandparents' home in Brentwood, on Long Island, and grandfather John Abatemarco said, "No grandfather wants to come home to find a snake wrapped around [his granddaughter's] leg." And her uncle Charlie described the scene, "I heard screaming and I came running into the room. The snake dropped off her leg into crib. I grabbed a back scratcher to capture it, not knowing if it was venomous." (It wasn't.)

Now the family will sue Toys R Us and mattress maker Sealy, claiming the mattress wasn't properly packaged when it was sold. While some suspect the snake, which is not indigenous to Long Island, may have been someone's pet that got loose and then slithered into the Abatemarco house to beat the heat, their lawyer said, "Either the heat from the baby drew the snake out of the mattress or just the snake migrated out on its own looking for a meal."

As for the mattress, it's been returned--and it's unclear what Toys R Us will be doing with it! And here's some other good bedding advice: Never bring home used or discarded mattresses, box frames, springs, etc., because they might be infested with bedbugs.

From http://www.newsday.com/news/local/ny-lisnak0610,0,5427798.story

"Cari Abatemarco, who is legislative director for state Sen. Craig Johnson (D-Port Washington) in his Albany office, said her parents had recently bought the baby's mattress at a store in Bay Shore, and family members said the packaging was not secure."

She works for a legislator. How convenient is that?

Let them ban insecure packaging, not harmless kingsnakes!

From FOX NEWS http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,364875,00.html

"While non-venomous, it is still a constrictor commonly kept as a pet."

O.K., it's non venomous. It's still a constrictor. Yes it is...
Does that imply that it is a dangerous animal, or that the daughter might have been in danger? In a way it does, which is patently absurd.

Who knows, there might have been a politicl agenda; I overlooked that take.

bizkit421 Jun 11, 2008 12:13 PM

Well come on, anything on Fox news has a conservative political agenda... Why do you think Cheney will only watch Fox? Its cause they're the only news channel that doesn't bash the current administration...

I agree but its the Dem party who has banned or supported banning of pets way more than Rep party.

Juile Jun 12, 2008 06:49 PM
