2 sheds in 12 days?? (LIMON)

dekaybrown Jun 10, 2008 10:38 AM

OK any expert takes on this?? Limon has just shed twice 12 days apart.

Is this any indication of something bad?? Both of them came off flawlessly, identical in size.

I have never seen any snake shed twice in 12 days time.

Thanks for any insight.....

Regards,
Wayne

Hmmm,....yes, that's usually a sign of something not good, like maybe a mite problem the snake is trying to rid itself of.

Injuries are another reason they do this, but I doubt it has any injuries or burns. I would check the animal and it's environment for mites. They like to gather in the small gap around the eye-caps(ocular scale), and under the chin between those scales too.

That very close together shed would make me wonder as well.

Doug - I am going to inspect for mites right now. (this cage is going to be a ***** with all the stuff to un-do)

Limon did have some minor injuries (I assume acquired during capture) and his nose was rubbed a little, but I think that if this were the case, it would have happened well before now.

He appears very healthy and still sucks down the groceries.

Thanks,
Wayne

yes, I agree, it would have happened before now if it was from being injured. That's why I strongly suspect mites might be the culprit.

Anyway, do as "Happy Hillbilly" mentioned with the magnifying glass examination, and take it from there.

good luck!, ~Doug

I agree with Doug, and mites would be my first guess, too. Use a magnifying glass if you have one to check around its eyes good.

Another cause could be a reaction to chemicals - cleaning chemicals, mite killer, etc, anything that it might have come in contact with.

Doug,
Have you sent me that leucistic Texas ratsnake yet or am I gonna have to come try to take it from ya? Like Wayne said the other day, that thing's a beauty.

Ya'll behave yourselves!

Just thought I'd throw this out. I took in a burmese pthon once that had crawled through roofing tar. I cleaned up what I could, but couldn't get it all off. He shed 4-5 times in the next month and a half, until all the soaked in tar was gone from his skin. So, maybe some sort if chemical exposure is a pssibility...
