corn snake growth rate

darkfall25 Jun 10, 2008 04:58 PM

Hi, first post here...back in 2006, i adopted a corn snake which the owner was unable to take care of...they purchased it as a hatchling, and was barely larger than a dollar bill. this august it'll be approx 2.5 years old (i have no idea what gender it is) and i have it on a diet of two pinky rats a week. I keep the Snake in a 20 gallon long aquarium with a few hiding places, climbing places, etc (at night, that snake likes to climb to the top and literally FLING itself about the aquarium..it's VERY entertaining to watch) However, i happened to be in a new petstore, and saw a couple 4 year old corns...the thing is, they seemed FAAAR larger than my corn, which has me concerned for the health of the animal. I have no idea how much a snake grows per year, so ill add some pictures of the snake...is the current size/build of the snake healthy?? any help is appreciated :D (and i have more pictures if needed)

looks healthy!! as long as the food item(s) leave a nice little lump in its belly, he should be fine. If you can hardly see a lump, then its time to up the food size. Snakes are like people. all are different shapes and sizes. yours is just small b/c the people who probably had him before you didnt take great care of it. just stick with him... i have an 06 male who wont eat anything larger than a fuzzy... so he is much smaller than other snakes from the same year. but he looks healthy

Growth rate is highly variable.

One of my '07 corns was 150g last time i weighed her, and feeds on small adult mice now. Another is ~50g and feeds on fuzzies.

Some of it depends upon how often you feed it, but some of it also depends upon genetics.
