Is there a safe way to transport eggs?

kitten6500 Jun 10, 2008 11:50 PM

I am moving 3 hours South on a rough stretch of highway and I am wondering if it's possible to safely transport eggs over that distance. I'm not too worried about the temperature drop, but rather the bumpiness of the road. Does anyone have experience with driving eggs over a rough road?

Hate to say this, but this is something you want to avoid if possible. If I HAD to do it, I'd carry the container on my lap on a chunk of foam to cushion the jarring. How do you plan to keep them near 90 degrees for the 3 hours?

I have moved multiple clutches to and from my partners house but we have never done any trips longer than about 1 hour.

I would be worried about jarring the eggs, not the temps...

I think you should be fine but perhaps if someone sat with the eggs on their lap that would really help!

A friend had the same problem. We contacted the Barkers. They said to go ahead. The trip wasn't bumpy, but it was nine hours. Foam rubber would help. When the National Zoo got the first Komodo eggs, they flew half the clutch to Ohio to incubate them there. I'm sure the jet had a lot of force on take off.

I transported a clutch of 7 for an hour and then the same clutch two more times, 30 minutes each time. All 7 hatched. I used a hovabator style incubator and a battery backup system to keep the temps up while they were in the car.

All of the eggs hatched and the babies were perfect.
